Disneyland is home to three hotels that are run by Disney which are Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, Disneyland Hotel, and Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel but there are also quite a few non-Disney run hotels right around the Disneyland Resort.
To help ensure that guests of these hotels have a good experience Disney came up with a set of guidelines that these hotels should follow. Those that follow these guidelines are considered to be Disney Good Neighbor Hotels. These guidelines ensure that each hotel in the program is up to a certain standard in terms of appearance, amenities, and cleanliness. Disney regularly inspects the hotels in the Good Neighbor program and those who don't follow the rules are removed from the program.
The idea is that if you can't stay at one of the Disney owned hotels you'll be able to choose one of these Good Neighbor hotels and still have a great lodging experience. Many of these hotels work very hard to make their property shine because there is just so much competition in this area.
Good Neighbor Hotels can be booked through Disney reservations where you can include the Good Neighbor Hotel Vacation Package which will cover the lodging, park tickets, get you early entry on Magic Mornings, and usually a couple of coupons and other things like a lanyard and pin.
