Although this attraction is now closed (as of Sept 27, 2014) for good, the Studio Backlot Tour was a pretty interesting attraction and one that wasn't really about thrills or high speed but rather showing how movie magic and special effects are created.

You started by watching a scene from a would-be movie taking place, in this case a military ship being bombed by aircraft. Various special effects with air, water, and fire take place to show you how it looks in person when being filmed versus how it all looks on screen.

Then you board a tram and take a slow ride through various scenes that show everything from old movie props to a working costume department. It was always billed as a place where you'd be watching movies it filmed but that really wasn't the case, more often than not the place was pretty dead in terms of anything being filmed here.

But it did have some interesting parts to it, mainly the catastrophe canyon section where the tram pulls up and a tanker truck explodes with huge fire balls while a flash flood takes place. Zillions gallons of water pouring all down the canyon as well as over the tram. It was a pretty neat thing to experience because you really felt like you were in the action.

Then it would all stop and the scene would reset itself so you could watch all of the pieces fall back into their starting places. The tram then goes behind the canyon to show how it's all fake and how it's a series of pipes, pumps, tanks, and so on. It's neat to take a peak behind the curtain like this.

It was never a great attraction but was still interesting. Hopefully this land goes to good use as a new attraction, or three.
