The original Capitola Wharf was built before 1856. It was repaired and lengthened in 1858. The wharf has been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times since then. The current wharf is basically in the same location. It was severely damaged by storms in 1978, 1982 and 1985 and was eventually restored in 1998 at a cost of about a million dollars.
Capitola wharf is actually a pier by nautical standards. A pier goes out to the water, a wharf goes along the shore.
