Hanging a poster used to be a pain, but with this easy method you'll no longer cringe when it's time to hang one up. The problem with hanging posters is that you either need to frame them (costly, takes time, etc) or you have to tape them to the wall (paint can peel, poster falls off, etc).

The easier solution is to hang the poster much like you would a framed painting or photograph. To do that, you need to make a mounting device that can be attached to the poster. Best of all, this is a kid friendly project. We'll use a straw and string method which requires the following materials.

  • Straws (1 or more).

  • String (or thread, fishing line, ribbon, etc).

  • Hot glue and glue gun. Supervise children accordingly.

Step 1: Glue

Glue the straw to the back of the poster, close to the top (about 1/4" to 1/2" down from the top). Lay down a bead of hot glue and press the straw into it. I also like to glue over the top of the straw in a few places as well as the ends, but don't plug the ends!

If you have a wide poster, you'll need more than one straw. In that case, you'll want to connect one straw to the next so you have one long straw. This will make the poster less like to crease between joints. The straws don't need to go all the way to each end, within an inch or so is fine.

Step 2: String

Cut a piece of string long enough to run through the straws and loop back to itself. Exactly how long depends on how low you want the poster to hang. Knot the ends together, then pull the string through the straw so the ugly knotted end lands inside the straw.

Step 3: Hang It

All that's left is to hang your poster. A small finishing nail or tack will work fine in most cases and leaves a tiny hole you can easily fill when the poster fad has run its course. Better yet, find an existing "thing" to hang it on.

Bonus

If you have a large poster you may first want to glue a piece of cardboard to the back of the poster, just slightly smaller than the entire poster. This will stiffen the entire piece and help stop it from blowing in a windy room.
