Polihale Beach State Park is as far north as you can go in a car on Kauai's west coast. Of course, even getting here in a car is no easy task. While you can drive here in a normal car, we couldn't advise anything less than a four wheel drive vehicle. The road to get here is very long, all dirt, super bumpy, and filled with rental-car-eating craters. If the road is muddy, just turn around as you won't stand a chance.

It tooks us 30 minutes to travel the 5 mile dirt road to get here and just as long to go back when we left. Keep in mind that you do NOT want to be stranded out here as we had no cell signal at all once we got a bit down the dirt road. Bring water and snacks and make sure your spare tire is good-to-go. Roads like this are the reason you never purchase rental cars when you see them for sale!

So why would anyone go here? Solitude. It's an enormous beach with tons of places where you are likely to be the only one around. It's a great place for camping and popular with locals for that reason. There are bathroom and showers here but things are not well maintained and not pretty.

The endless sandy beach is amazing to see and the ocean and mountain views are epic. If it was easier to get to I'd recommend you come and take a look. Of course, if it was easier to get to then it would be filled with people and lose some of the magic. If you enjoy an adventure and have the vehicle to get here, then this is your beach. Just remember, no cell phone service and no lifeguards means you're completely on your own out here.
