Secluded beach, great for snorkeling during calm seas. Parking is terrible, but we have a solution.

Features
• Sand Type: Regular • Parking: Poor / Few • Good For: Scuba Diving • Good For: Snorkeling • Good For: SUP

Looking for a secluded beach with great snorkeling, then Makua Beach, or Tunnels Beach as it's better known, is for you. This is an excellent hidden beach in the Haena area on the north shore of Kaua'i. It would likely see larger crowds if the parking situation wasn't so bad. And it is bad so let's start with that.

There are a couple of small place to park off the Kuhio Highway just south of our pinpoint (see map / directions page) for the beach is which is fairly easy to see from the road (a second is a bit further west down the road). Go early enough and you might be one of the few spots there. More likely is that it will be full and possibly even have a few cars waiting for a spot to open up.

The better and easier option is just to drive further west down the road to Ha'ena Beach Park / Maniniholo Beach which is likely to have plenty of parking. From there walk towards the ocean and head right on the sand to our map pin point and you're at tunnels. Sure, it's a bit of a walk along the beach but the parking is so much better this way.

The snorkeling hear can be excellent if the ocean is calm so it's worth the trip for sure but there is no lifeguard here so you're on your own. On that note, there aren't any facilities at all here but you will find showers and bathrooms nearby at Ha'ena Beach Park / Maniniholo Beach.

The beach itself is very long and there should be plenty of room to spread out, because even with the bad parking situation this place is no secret and does attract plenty of beach fans (especially on the weekends).
