The Andaz Maui At Wailea is a high end, luxury resort located right on Mokapu Beach in the south Maui town of Wailea. Let's dive into the all of the details of this beautiful property.

Property Overview

This one is a pretty big deal, it's a hotel to get excited about. There aren't tons of new high end hotels popping up on Maui these days and certainly none in the Wailea area. This one is called Andaz (pronounced: on-dahz, so it sounds exotic and fancy).

The building that Andaz occupies isn't new, it's been here for a while and was another resort property years ago. But Hyatt (who own and run the Andaz branded properties) gutted the entire building and essentially started over. This isn't the usual renovation hotels get, everything inside the building is new. It has 300 rooms and is set on 15 acres right in front of Mokapu Beach.

The Andaz entrance is quite understated and doesn't scream "high end hotel entrance" at all. But drive in and suddenly it all makes sense. There isn't any huge, fancy porte-cochère type entrance. Just a plain, simple, and modern area to pull up with friendly valet guys who will open your doors and valet your car. There is no self-parking option and the valet is a $30 per night fee. Speaking of fees, you're also going to pay a $40 per night resort fee (see Hotel & Resort Fees & Taxes). That's an additional $70 per night (plus taxes) on top of any room rate you find! Ouch!

What does that pricey resort fee get you? A lot of the usual amenities you'd expect in any hotel along with a welcome lei greeting and beverage, reusable water bottle, water bottle refill stations, free sunscreen at the pool, access to the 24-hour fitness center, and free wifi to name a few.

Check In

Walk up the stairs and into the hotel lobby and try to find a front desk. Go ahead, try. It doesn't exist. You'll likely instead get blindsided by the amazing pool and ocean views. You'll then be greeted by one of the hotel's staff who will give you a lei greeting, a chilled wet towel, and then a cool beverage (homemade lavender lemonade in our case). If you just got off a long plane flight, this will seem like the best wet towel and drink you've ever had.

If you have kids with you, there is a giant indoor sand box area for them to mess about. They really thought of everything here. No lines to wait in, it all just works. They'll verify your credit card on a tablet device which will activate the room cards. This is the future of luxury, people, and it is glorious. Apply this model to airport check-in counters and the TSA and air travel could be fun again!

Rooms

In most hotels they point you to your room from the front desk and send you on your way. Just head down this hall, turn right, then left, go passed the first bank of elevators, make another left, and then use the second bank of elevators. That's usually how it goes, but at the Andaz they walk you to your room. Another nice touch. I'm hot, tired, cranky, and in a new environment and love being walked to my room.

Once inside they'll show you the features of the room. The bathroom area (and toilet inside) is semi-hidden behind panels. The shower has shutters that open in case you want to put on a show while washing up. The lights are all electronically controlled from control panels and the window shades are electronically controlled as well.

There is a mini refrigerator in the room, and you'd never find it if they didn't show you where it's at. Inside are some cold beers and sodas. The sodas are free (well, part of that resort fee you're paying), but the beer is an extra cost.

The rooms are nice and very modern with lots of straight lines and clean white surfaces. The ceilings may feel a bit low, probably because this is an older building. They make up for this with beds that are low to the ground (no traditional box spring) so it doesn't feel cramped even though the room isn't very large.

There are small lanais attached with chairs if you wanted to sit outside. The bathroom is small but well laid out with a separate room for the toilet. Speaking of the toilet, it's an eco friendly toilet so you get a small button for a #1 and a big button for a #2. This, and their other eco friendly practices (LEED certified building, garbage can and a recycle can in the room, no paper for check in or check out, etc) are a nice touch and something all hotels should be doing here.

Remember that shower I mentioned? It's amazing. It has a rain head in the ceiling and is large enough for a small party. It's also well ventilated via shutters so it doesn't get overly humid and wet and should help avoid mold issues. The shower pan (bottom) is a slab rather than tile, which means no nasty tile grout issue. Brilliant.

Pool & Beach

The pool area here is really nice. It's a shame that since they created the entire pool area (it wasn't here with the old building) they didn't go with more of a fun water park theme. I know, this is a luxury hotel and therefore they prefer modern, luxurious style pools but I'd much prefer a fun pool with slides, a lazy river, whatever. Instead, you have some beautiful pools on four different levels but they're boring overall, though certainly elegant. They only offer one hot tub so it may get a little packed at times.

The bottom pool is the place to be if you have kids and it has a zero entry slope that small kids can easily walk into.

If you want some quiet time then you'll enjoy the two pools on the other side of the building which are adults only.

But you probably really came to Maui for the world-class beaches it offers. Luck for you, the Andaz is located right on Mokapu Beach which is an incredibly beach. As if that's not enough, you can also walk right next door to Ulua Beach Park which is another amazing beach.
