Pololu Valley Lookout - Activities On Big Island Kapaau, Hawaii

Pololu Valley Lookout, located at the end of State Route 270 in the Kapaau area on Hawaii's Big Island, is where you'll see one of the most popular scenic vistas on the Big Island. The view of the ridges along the coastline is spectacular. The Big Island has parts that are breathtakingly beautiful, and this is one of them.

Interestingly, this part of the island was once inhabited by ancient Hawaiians, but this area could never be developed in recent times because of earthquake activity and fear of the dreaded Tsunami.

The Pololu Trail is a steep hiking trail that will take you down a cliff face to the beach below. Pololu Valley Beach has that unique black sand that you see on the volcanic parts of the island. Because of the rough water in this area, snorkeling and swimming is not advised.

The good news is that you're here for the views and the views from the lookout are spectacular, on par with Waipio Valley Lookout.

For those that would like to get a better view of the valley, a helicopter tour can take you to view areas that are inaccessible by foot. Parking is limited, so you may have to walk a little bit to the vista. There are no bathrooms or facilities in the area.
