Kaumana Trail is an easy, family friendly out and back hiking trail found in the Hilo area on Hawaii's Big Island. The trail length is around 1.5 miles long, so it's a 3 mile hike of you make it a full, round trip hike.

The trail is easy to find along Saddle Road, the main road that connects the Kailua-Kona (west) side of the island to Hilo (east) side, see our map / directions page for exact location.

The trail itself runs in a general east / west direction that parallels Saddle Road and can be accessed via trailhead on the east and west side.

The west side of the trail starts at around 5,250 feet above sea level while the east side is around 4,950 feet above sea level with a total elevation change of around 300 feet. Walk the trail from west to east and it's downhill while heading back from east to west is uphill.

The Kaumana Trail follows an old lava flow that date backs to 1855 which passes through an old forest. Native Hawaiian birds are a common sight along the hike. Before heading out be sure to read up on Hiking Safety & Essentials and wear bright clothing as the area is open to year round hunting.

The map above shows the general route of the Kaumana Trail.
