The Contemporary Resort is located inside of the Magic Kingdom Resort area with Bay Lake on one side and the Seven Seas Lagoon on the other. It's so close to the Magic Kingdom that you can walk there or even watch the fireworks from the resort. In fact, watching fireworks from the California Grill restaurant at the top of the main building is a unique experience.

The main resort opened on October 1, 1971 and it's A-frame shape quickly became an icon. It's unique structure allowed Disney to construct the main building while making the individual rooms offsite. The modular rooms were then slid into the main tower. In addition to the main build, known as the Contemporary Tower, there is also a set of low rise hotel room buildings that are connected to each other and the Contemporary Tower via a walkway.

In 2009, Disney added the Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort for members of their Disney Vacation Club (though non DVC members can stay there as well). This new tower is located right next to the Contemporary Tower and connects via a ground path and elevated walkway. Guests at the Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort have access to their own pool area.

Rooms

When choosing a room to book at Disney's Contemporary Resort the first choice will be which part of if you wish to stay in. The main Contemporary Tower building is where most people want to stay.

Rooms here are higher up and you'll have choices on theme park views or lake views. The Atrium Club Level is located here as well and, for a hefty fee, gives guests access to a lounge with "free" snacks, small meals, drinks, and desserts throughout the day.

The next option is the Garden Wing which is a series of low-rise buildings that are located right next to the main building. That means there is a short walk to get to and from the monorail line inside the main building. On the flip side, these rooms may be quieter as the monorail can be considered a little noisy to some people.

Room types range from standard hotel rooms to one and two bedroom suites.

Pool & Recreation

The main pool features a 17 foot high waterslide, a white sandy beach area, and two hot tubs. Cabanas can be rented by the hour or day and feature a TV and mini-fridge. A water splash area is great for the smaller kids in your group and an all ages "quiet" pool is available as well.

If you get hungry or thirsty, the The Sand Bar is just steps away to help you out. You'll also find a marina near the pool which will help arrange for fishing and parasailing adventures or to simply let you rent one of their incredibly fun Water Mice (small, 1-2 person boats).

If you have gamers in your family then they'll love the huge arcade here. Tennis courts, jogging trails, and volleyball courts are also available for guest use.

Dining & Shopping

The Contemporary Resort offers quite a few dining options. California Grill and Chef Mickey's are among the most popular here so if you'd like to try them you'll want to reserve in advance. For more casual dining try The Wave... Of American Flavors, Contempo Cafe, Contemporary Grounds, The Sand Bar. For lounges, your options are Cove Bar, Outer Rim, and The Wave Lounge.

On the shopping side the main shop here is Bayview Gifts which offer a wide variety of clothing, candy, souvenirs, and Disney themed items.

Transportation

Disney's Contemporary Resort is conveniently located right on the Walt Disney World Monorail. It's the only resort here that actually has the monorail passing right through it's structure. Although pretty neat, it's also not the quietest so keep that in mind if your room is in the main tower.

While both of the monorail lines pass through the hotel, you can only get on and off of the resort monorail. The express line does not stop here. The resort line also stops at the Ticket And Transportation Center, Disney's Polynesian Village Resort, Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa (which includes The Villas at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa), and the Magic Kingdom before coming back around to the Contemporary Resort.

So getting to the Magic Kingdom and back is incredibly easy though you can also walk to the Magic Kingdom via a relatively short walking path. If you're heading to Epcot you'll take the resort monorail to the Ticket And Transportation Center and change to the Epcot Monorail.

For all other places in The World, bus transportation is available.
